Question: I am saddened by an issue that happened to my maid’s friend. She was to be sent back home due to underperfomance and flirting with employer. Therefore , lady employer sent her to agency to be sent home immediately. But in the end, instead the agent took her to a hotel and rape her before sending to the airport on the dot of the flight time, due to delay of flight she managed to call my maid and told her of her plight. She hung up too fast before I could tell her to make a police report. I am really saddened by the atrocious behaviour of the agent for taking advantage of her. It is even known to some maids here that uncooperative maids ready to be sent home to their home countries are being raped too! There is nothing much or they do not know what to do. I really hope as a journalist, you could help to unveil such horrifying behavior of such agencies in a Civilised country like Singapore and MOM should be aware such practices and do something about it. Other inhumane behaviour is some maids were being starved without food from agencies while in S’pore for medical check ups and work pass to be issued.
I've always advised my girls never to flirt with anyone, be it the employer or the agents. Rape is a criminal act and it should be reported to the police. In this case, the girl can report the rape in her home country and have the embassy help her bring the case over to the police in Singapore. We must never let the criminals get away.
