Question:
Dear Madam,
I came across your review about the medical operation for your agency maid. I myself also come across a incident, wonder if I can seek your help.
I employ a maid from [agency name removed by admin] on the 16th of OCT . The agency deliever the maid to me at 9pm
On the 17th morning, the maid climb on a stool to wash toilet and apparently fall and becos of the shock, the maid suddenly become very disoriented and violent.
The agency was called in and subsequently the agency call the police. The maid became agaitated becos the police kept repeating the same questions, the maid turned violent again, this time the police handcuff the maid and took her back to the police station.
The maid was later refer to the NUH hospital for some tests. after being confirmed that the maid was not physcially
injuried, they refer the maid to the IMH where she was observed for 1 nite before she was discharged to be sent home.
The whole hospital bills came up to almost $5,000 plus.
I was told by the Insurance agency that the hospital bills could not be claimed becos the Discharge summary dignoised the patient to be psychosis and as a result the Insurance agency is not liable.
I have the maid for less than 24hrs and I am slam with this bills for $5,000 plus, is there anyway I can seek some assistance? I am a disable person, I am unemploy and I need a maid for my daily living.
I will be very grateful if you can shed some light where I can seek some help. the agency is very
irresponisble, the Insurance agency is trying not to pay, the hospital is chasing me for payment and I do not have that money to pay.
[Contact information removed by admin] if anyone can help me, I will be very grateful.
Regards,
lucy
ANSWER:
Hi Lucy,
I am sorry to know about your predicament.
I do not have a good answer to your question. But, there are a few places where you can consider seeking help. One, is the Ministry of Manpower. Let them know about your situation and see whether they can advise you on what help they can render you.
Two, this depends on the insurance agency - some agencies are sympathetic and may help cover part of the bill. You may wish to talk to your insurance agency further. You may wish to check whether psychosis is a condition that is excluded from insurance coverage. However, in your case, it is most likely that the period when the insurance coverage is effected is too short, and hence, it is rendered ineffective.
I am not sure how you are eligible to employ a maid given that you are unemployed. But, if you are under some social scheme or you have sponsors, you may wish to consider getting help from them.
I hope this helps. I am sorry I couldn’t provide a better solution.
Thank you.

Question:
Hi,
I need to know the levy for getting a phippines maid. My husband just passed away and I got two boys aged 11 & 6. I’m a working mother, can I enjoy the concessionary rate, $170? Also, what other charges I need to pay, eg salary rate.
Thank you.
Joleen
ANSWER:
Yes, you should be able to enjoy the concessionary rate
of $170 because at least 1 of your children is below 12. He must also be
a Singapore Citizen and be living with you for you to enjoy the
concessionary rate.

Question:
Hi,please enlighten me if my sister-in-law who is staying with my parent is entitled to the concessions rate of monthly levy of $170?
ANSWER:
The concessionary rate is given under very specific
criteria. If your sister-in-law has at least 1 child below 12 who is a
Singapore Citizen and is staying with her at your parents' place and
your sister-in-law's IC reflects that address and the maid is registered
to work at the address, I think she is entitled to the concessionary
rate. However, it is still up to the MOM to decide.

Question:
Is there tax relief claim for maid levy for single who has parent that is 77years old and require care? How else can I get help?
Regards
Cicelea
ANSWER:
If your parent is a Singapore Citizen and is living with
you, you should be able to get a concessionary rate. Since you are
single, you will not qualify for any maid levy tax relief since the tax
relief is given to married women to encourage them to return to the work
force. Late 2012 , there is also a Foreign Domestic Worker Grant for
elderly with physical challenges (need to be certified by doctors).
However, there is a per capita income cap of $2,200 per month per
household.

ANSWER:
I believe you can seek help from the MOM or your MP and see if they can
help you with it. There may be other programs available to help
subsidize the maid levy.
